Default Is this a stuiable beginners laser ?

    Hi All,

I have been looking at lasers on ebay, I have my eye on a RGY, having never purchased a laser before, I have only the info I have acquired over the last week or so about them.

Is something like this suitable as a beginner laser?

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=120380775811

I would of course love to have the time to assemble my own, with 30K+ scanners and full analogue modulation but sadly that wont happen in the near future. Is TTL in reality such a bad thing on a little laser like this?

Also it the optional 'deal' on hardware worth it?

    Thanks

It doesn't look too bad for the price as a way to dip your toe into the world of lasers and we all have to start somewhere.

Bear in mind though that within a few years this will probably be relegated to the status of "a toy" as you move onto meatier projectors.

If you've the time (and inclination) take a trip over to Leicester this Sunday to attend UKLEM4 where you'll be able to pick the brains of some of the cleverest bods in the UK regarding Lasers.
We're a friendly bunch and the meets are very informal.
You may even get some alternative ideas about what to buy.
At the very least, you have a great day out and see a collection of lasers and displays that you'll remember for a long time.

Hi Soforene, thanks for the reply. I saw the info about that meet on a members webpage. It looks fantastic!!! Unfortunately I*have booked work in on sunday, so I am now trying to figure out a way around that hahaha.

Back to that laser, I*suspect you are right, I tend to get quite involved in hobbies etc and after seeing other DIY*projectors, it makes me want to do just the same.

I just didnt know if there was any inherent reasons that i should avoid those lasers or any like that for anything other than obviously how cheap it is.

    Avoid cus it's cheap?
    Naaahhhh....
As long as you are aware that you get what you pay for then you can't really complain.
A couple of hundred quid isn't that expensive (in the world of lasers) and you'll have the thrill of owning your very own projector.
Then you start to hanker after more, especially once you've run through all the built inpatterns and then want to get a bit creative.
Then the pennies start flying out ......

But we all have to start somewhere.

I have purchased a couple of lasers from Gary of "Laser Know How", via e-bay and direct with him. He is a stand up guy and has always been very helpful answering my questions before and after purchase and when I had a problem with my RGB laser I purchased from him. Not his fault it had a duff DMX board and he just sent me a new one out. Also because I helped another customer of his out with iShow (YUK) he gave me a set of LP30 scanners, amps and power supply. Still got to fit these at some time, needs a complete rebuild

The iShow software is a starting point but do not expect to create any fantastic results any time soon as it is very hard work.

I am not affiliated in anyway with "Laser Know How" this is just my personal experience of them.

    Thanks for the info guys.

I have just purchased that scanner, I made an offer of £199 and it was accepted. I was looking at the Moncha software too, but I think I may leave that for now and play with the DMX part of the system (I have spent far too much this month already)

Cant wait to get this now hehehe.

I made a quick video of it:

I'm hoping I may be able to 'bribe' NRG lasers with some more high quality video of this laser and what it can do in exchange for a nice discount on the Moncha software etc... We shall see hehe....

That's not too bad man. Not for a first laser. That baby dancing is kinda funny. I might have pissed myself to see that for the first time drunk. Looks like a bunch of DMX frames being changed to music.

I just added the music in post. Ill do one in sync I just threw it together to show some friends. The animations etc are simply built in stuff. Obviously there is better gear out there, but its pretty fully featured for only £200 etc.
