Guys, anything over CLASS IIIA in public is supposed to be done like a Military Operation, or a Medical Procedure, or a Aviation Procedure.

There is a checklist, there is a responsible person, and there are strict requirements on the equipment. In most cases, the builder does not decide what is safe enough, you have to go with the proven and required techniques and parts. The most important of which is lots of metal, especially everywhere things can go wrong. And some of that metal has to be movable and block the beam. Beams are blocked by default.

I'm sorry to say a lot of cheap junk has slipped into the US, and it gives the impression that it and its low level of engineering is safe. It is NOT.

I've passed a Arizona state inspection, its draconian, but done for a reason. They even look at the artistics and pass judgement on that, as well as the beam placement.

You go out in public with a laser, you are the responsible person, and you have to follow the rules. Ignorance of the rules or the law or basic engineering principles is no excuse.

I know the grammar/spelling police will come to get us all pretty soon! I guess I could use a sentence to say I was shuddering from the cold wind, so I closed the shutters...

Laser (the acronym derived from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation) is a spectacular manifestation of this process. It is a source which emits a kind of light of unrivaled purity and intensity not found in any of the previously known sources of radiation. - Lasers & Non-Linear Optics, B.B. Laud.

Guys, given the chance I would publish my variance, show reports, and manufacturers report publicly in a heartbeat. However , my best friend and I do our variances together, and he has said, NO. It can take up to 6 months for processing some times, depending on what you ask for, and for that reason, he considers them intellectual property. They are not public documents, either.

So I will continue to answer your questions, but your gonna have to belive me when I try to tell you what you have to do. Some of this stuff is written, some of it is spelled out by law in CFRs, some of it comes in letters and memos and rulings from the CDRH, and some of it you get told over the phone. . My pile of government documents related to laser show safety requirements is in excess of 200 pages.

When that person shows up at a LEM, I'll show him the documents.

You should get paid for posts like that Steve!

Thanks for the recap. I never considered kicking the Fire Marshall out when I did my tests. I usually got on the speakers and informed everyone to look away as my turrets were already set for static beams, but I'll definitely boot everyone when I set up for a show with my new laser.

    Steve,

Thanks for the great information. This is very interesting even for us that do not play with lasers out in public.
