Yes, a computer power supply is the ideal solution as it is very stable voltage.

    hi guys ...

Just a little word of warning ... ( but i could be wrong as im a little behind on the current computer technology )

I have used PC PSUs before for various aplications ( other than powering motherboads )

and i have experienced problems where if the expected load on a voltage rail is not met on a switching PSU it will float and struggle to regulate... for instance i had an aplication that wanted a 3 amp 12v supply with a 5v ref ... but the 5v was all over the place because the minimum load conditions were not met

it may be the case that modern PC PSUs dont suffer from this but better to test the outputs with no load prior to connecting

    all the best ... Karl

Interesting effect Karl, were you putting load on the 12V and then none on the 5V when you had problems? I don't think that temperature would effect the system too much. Perhaps your power supply was just going bad? I have used lots of different computer power supplies with no problem.

    Hi ben

Yes i had a load on the 12v ... but because the biggest laod is expected on the 5V it threw a wobbly...

but i have also used switching power supplys that have no minimum load restrictions ..

i just dont want to see the modulation input fucked because of an unstable 5v rail

as long as the PSU is tested without load and is stable ... ther should not be a problem

    all the best ... Karl

Yeah, interesting. I would guess the power supply regulation was shot somehow. It should have a voltage regulation system which would have no preference to current.

The AT and ATX specs allow a mandatory 1 amp load on the 5v rail.

Good point Karl - the switcher that powers my neos (not a pc one i hasten to add) actually shuts down if there is no load on the 5V rail - which I dont use! Hence there is a wirewound resistor bolted to its chasiss that sucks some 5V current and allows operation.

Yob - yes that ebay psu will do, if its an up to date one (im sure it is if its new) it will have a single 4 way connector with 2 yellow wires and 2 black wires - chop this off and wire into the CNI driver - Yellow is +12V black is 0V. Then look at the big wide motherboard conector and short out the green wire with one of the black wires - this will turn the psu on. Pinch 5V from one of the drive connectors to test the blanking - after measuring the volts with it all disconected but the grenn and black shorted (to ensure its stable as Karl says) - hook up and away ya go.

I promise to take some pics of the goods (blue+green) tonight but there won't be any light coming from them for a while.
