it looks as if he is making sure that none of the beam actually gets wasted.

look at the paths of the red laser...

This is the aiming and ranging system onboard a Boeing 747 missile defence aircraft. The main laser on board is a Megawatt chemical laser @ 1315nm! They are aiming for 2.33MW but it looks like government funding is about to be cut off.

Never mind; it'll probably end up on ebay next year, then we just need a 6.5 ton KTP crystal, some largish optics, probably best to fit some sort of a heatsink (maybe Aixiz have them) and we'd have a pretty funky 657 blue.

Another year or so later; somebody on LPF would have it mounted in a pointer!

which will eventually make it into the hands of a some uneducated inner city youth, who will make a youtube video of him and his friends pointing it at young ladies, it will get confiscated by a beat cop and the thing will end up in the evidence room where it will go undiscovered until that precinct closes down due to lack of funding and the laser will get sold at auction to the highest bidder.. That of course will be the US government who plan to mount it in an airplane and the cycle begins all over again...

    657 is red.

With a few watts of power, you don't need fog to make the beams visible in a relatively dark room. Look at the size of the lasers!

You'd be surprised how much dust there is in "clean" air unless you're in a class 10 clean room. If I were working with dichros that may be taking a megawatt of COIL output, I'd want to avoid sneezing on them too.

<kent> It's your own fault, Knight, didn't anyone ever tell you to make sure your optics were clean?
