Default Mamba Black Copy and the Chinese

I just found this while browsing EBay.

    The software looks strangely familiar.

    Ebay Item Number:

    170313519906

    Anyone have any more information?

Yes, this is cracked MAMBA software.

Legal action is in the works to prosecute the company who made the crack, as well as all companies who distribute this...

More news about this, and a laser and lighting-related anti-piracy organization to prosecute other cracked software will be forthcoming...

That would explain the resemblance... they should have written their own software... Poor practice the selling of the cracked software.

AIUI it's pretty pointless attacking these people, since for every one you knock down, there's another three popping up to take their place. The real answer is to do what Microsoft did, and sell a low-cost version of the software in markets otherwise dominated by piracy.

Actually yes. There was a company who unlawfully took some of our images and incorporated them in their product. Just one letter solved it. Also, Lightspeed went after (and won agains) a Chinese company who was unlawfully distributing their content.

There is a gigantic hammer about to come down on the rest of the pirates. It should have been here by now but... you know how things get delayed sometimes...

    Cool

No, the Chinese version has a trojan embedded in it. A pal of mine went to a client's facility to troubleshoot their laser projector. They purchased it off E-bay, and it came with this same "cracked" version of Mamba. From the looks of it, it's like Mamba version 1.6 or something.

Anyway, the computer they had installed it on was all but unusable because the trojan horse software was chewing up all available processor time. Initially the client thought it was a hardware problem, so they had a new PC ready to install the software on. Fortunately, this new PC had some up-to-date anti-virus software on it (free 1 year trial from the manufacturer), so when they installed the pirated Mamba Black CD, the virus checker immediately popped up and identified the infected files on the CD.

Unfortunately, it didn't stop the execution of the install program, which mean that the new PC got infected as well! They were able to boot into safe mode though and clean it up. The client was advised to contact Medialas and ask about purchasing a legitimate copy of Mamba Black. No word yet on what's been done there... But right now their laser projector is not connected to anything.

Bottom line: Avoid these cracked versions of Mamba Black. Not only is it piracy, but these cracked versions can infect your machine. Medialas has been warning people about this for at least 9 months now - maybe longer than that even.
