    Default LCD Projector Optics

    Hi All,
I've managed to get a few LCD projectors that the company was going to throw away instead of getting them repaired. They have optics like this:

The dichroic mirrors look very nice and would work in a laser projector. I'm interested in the X-Cube prism. Does anyone know how these work?

I understand the PBS cubes we normally use. There's a 90-degree polarization difference between the 2 input beams. Does the X-Cube use 3 different polarizations?

    Inquiring minds want to know!!

    hi,

these X cubes are, I think, only dichroïc prisms assembled in a X fashion, and according to a test by a friend at laserfreak.net, polarization seems to have no effect

I also had the chance to get an old videoprojector, but it had no cube in it, so you're lucky

anyway, the dichros I scavenged are VERY tall, like 12*8cm

The cube I has was polarizing, but I never tested it with more than two colours

I'm going to do some tests on the x-cube with my lasers. The problem is that my blue is currently in China undergoing some surgery... , and the 400mw 640nm that's on order that hasn't showed up yet.

I've got a 5mw red and a 5mw green pointer that I'll play with. I think my 1W green will be a little on the excessive side, however.

    I'll let y'all know.

I just tested the cube out of a projector today. It was only 35% efficient combining red green and violet lasers. It would probably work a bit better with 473nm but it still wouldn't be good.

The dichros however are quite useful and I use them in my scanner. (haven't tested efficiency but it's probably >90%
