Ok, found the way to do this - after you convert the bitmap to a vector graphic and edit the points to your satisfaction, choose Effects. Modify Path, Flatten Beziers...
A value of 1 or 2 is fine.
from there you can export as DXF and laserboy or the latest latest version of ILS SOS can load it and convert to ILDA. With ILD SOS you'll get a real time preview on your projector of the path optimizations it applies. However the inkscape DXF exporter only exports in one color right now.
