    Default External PSU Idea

Just a small, potentially space saving, idea I have had for a while.

Has anyone tried using an external PSU instead of mounting it inside home build scanners? Where to put the PSU was an issue for my build and now its placed theres about a 1cm gap from the back wall of the enclosure where the cables are connected to it... It's not an issue because I know it is safe there but I have had the idea to mount the PSU in a PSU enclosure from maplin instead of inside the scanner.

Has anyone tried this? Only issue I can think of is how to safely mount it inside the PSU enclosure but other than that it seams a good idea. The connection between mains, PSU and scanner can be similar to a laptop PSU then.

Why go through the trouble of having to haul around two boxes?
If it fits inside the scanner, leave it. If it doesn't fit, get a bigger scanner enclosure ...

What happens when you forget to take the external PSU with you?

i think the point is valid.

An external PSU would greatly reduce the size of the scanner box making it easier to hang and position.

Just put some big capacitors in the remote head to compensate for the ohmic loss in the cables during high peak power scans,
Done that many times in remote installs.

Been there, done that, got the Tee shirt, and selling it at a garage sale.

Rather than mounting an open frame power supply in an external box, you can just use a pair of laptop-style switchmode power supplies. It's unusual to find a bipolar one, so you can use regular ones in series. I remember there used to be a 12K galvo set for the original Pangolin LSD on Amiga that did this. Very compact compared to the open frame power supplies! Best regards, weartronics
