I always let my meter settle for a half hour before I zero it, and another 5 minutes after the initial zero to make sure I'm good to go.
Make sure the room is sealed off so drafts dont effect your readings.
If measuring over long periods, especially with air-cooled gas lasers, dont forget that your laser is heating the room and you'll need to re-zero every couple hours, depending on how much heat is being cranked out. For my HeCd I re-zero every hour and a half or so if I'm really looking for accurate readings. If you're just going for ballpark readings this isn't really necessary.
