Yeah i get it as stated here

thats what i thought the -ist meant. as in; a pianist is someone who plays the piano, an artist is someone who creates art, a laserist is someone who works with lasers.

the question they are actually asking is was the suffix attached to mean "one who works with" or was it attached as part of a combination of "laser" and "artist"

semantically there is not real answer because one would only know if we knew the intention of the first person to use the word.

Someone may use the word laserist to refer to ONLY laser artist, while others may use the word to refer to anyone that works with lasers.

I would have to say that since the term laserist seems to be uniquely applied to the field of laser display, i can see why people would attach the value of the word "artist" to the word. I do however think that it is improper as a laserist could have no real artistic talent and still be a laserist because of his technical knowledge or experience. It is therefore my conclusion that the -ist in laserist should not carry the weight of the word "artist" and should be considered to mean "one who works/practices/concerns oneself with"

i did a google and found there are over 1200 words that end with ist and some are quite suprising
