Default Under Sea Mean and Green

Here's some pictures I promised to post in another thread but that thread was getting out of hand so I thought I'd put them here. This is a 300mW 532nm laser system mounted in a pressure vessel used to scan ocean water for contaminants. Standard depth for this device is 400 meters.

The black box in the center is the laser head with a fiber coupler attached on the left.

The system all buttoned up ready for deployment

    Wow that looks cool ..

how does the laser cope with temperature variations at that depth ?

Someone had better get glasses, the side flanges are not for casing halves, but for mounting. If you ever see piece of deep submergence gear with shell halves, I want to know about it. NOT the norm.

Does the temperature even vary at that depth?

Well there's a classic example of a one off prototype forced into operational use, lol.

Normal operations keeps the laser toasty enough at depth. And by the way it does need the screws installed on the control end of the casing to be sealed properly.

The current project will test the ability to keep a 10W 532nm laser operational in the field running the full environmental range of -25F to about 130F ambient.

Speaking as a former submariner, yes, the ocean temperature does vary significantly with depth. Believe it or not, even the salinity varies with depth.
