    I know it varies WITH depth, but does the temperature at, say, 5000 feet below sea level change significantly?

    I am Divemaster and the difference between the surface temp and temp at 30m is noticable, about 2 to 3 degrees in the Red Sea in the summer.

    I suppose I should define "significantly". If we're talking about just enough delta-T to change the sonic lensing properties of the water (which can mean just a few degrees), then the answer is yes - all the way to the bottom, and it's not anything close to linear. (More like chaotic, actually.) But if we're talking about magnitudes similar to the difference between surface temp and the temp at 100 ft, then no - not that much change.
