Quote: "There is a theory which states that if ever, for any reason, anyone discovers what exactly the Universe is for and why it is here it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another that states that this has already happened.”... Douglas Adams 1952 - 2001

Laser (the acronym derived from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation) is a spectacular manifestation of this process. It is a source which emits a kind of light of unrivaled purity and intensity not found in any of the previously known sources of radiation. - Lasers & Non-Linear Optics, B.B. Laud.

Wow. cool. He could of at least painted the pvc handle .
About 10 years ago was the oppty of a lifetime. A 1KW CO2 laser with power supply for $500. It was not working, but this was a transverse excitation fast flow unit with slab electrodes and many, many button cathodes. It was variable from low to 1KW, shaped and sized sort of like a 55 gallon drum with blowers and heat exchangers inside. They said it was working when removed years before, and it had been open to atmosphere for a long time. However it was the serviceable kind, the top came off to work on it. I think Spectra-Physics. It was a 5-pass unit with a solid copper total reflector at each end, plus a ZnSe output coupler. At the time I was too poor to buy it. It was in CA.
