Want to buy New Scanners... But!

Does anyone know how difficult it would be for a novice to install new scanners and get everything back to "Normal operating condition"

I do not know where to start and what I will need to know or purchase "before" even trying to do it install new scanners.



There are 2 brands I am looking at buying >> CT 6215H or EyeMagic EMS7000


I have attached a few photos of what is now installed in the projector....I have NO Idea What Brand these are....Does anyone have an idea what brand these scanners are?

Its not hard at all. your new scanners will come with the main mounting block. You will need to drill a hole in your base plate for the new scanners. The EMS7000 group buy just happened so you missed out on the GREAT price of those. I'd post in the buy section to see if anyone wants to sell a set of EMS7k's from the group buy. Both CT and EyeMagic have small scan amps. Little smaller then what I see in your box now, So mounting the scan amps for those I don't see a problem with. Never owned a set of EyeMagic myself but everyone I see with them is happy. Both of the scanners you have listed are GREAT options if animation is going to be you main use.

You mentioned if I am going to be doing primarily animation the EMS7000 or the CT's would be great....What do you suggest for a scanner system if I want the best of both worlds animation AND Beam show's?

I use the CT6215h's in my RGB projector, and I am currently having another RGB projector built that will use the EMS7000's .

It is my personal opinion that if you have never fitted a scanset you don't want to start with the CT's (or EMS's for that matter). Both scansets are expensive top end options and any error on your part could render them completely useless. It would be far better to find an experienced person to fit them for you unless you are supremely confident that you are capable.

As for what scanners would be better for graphics and beam shows there are good reasons for using high quality scanners for both applications. Some would say that CT's/EMS are overkill for beamshows as the high quality scans aren't really necessary for just projecting beams. However, this is missing the point somewhat. One of the key reasons for using high quality scansets for beamshows is reliability, as these scansets aren't likely to fail at an inappropriate moment as they are built to much higher standards than some of the Far Eastern made products . Having said that (and before I get shouted at ), the quality of some Chinese sets is much better than others. Have a look at the DT40 Pro's for a mid priced reliable option

If you are concentrating on Graphics/Abstracts then either the CT's or the EMS's would be a fabulous 'top notch' choice.

Also, another thing to bear in mind when you're fitting CT's is the power requirements. There's no way you can run such high speed scanners from a 'normal' small power supply, you need a dedicated power supply to each amp to get the best out of them.

I am from the USA, so I would be looking at installing new power supply's along with the new scanners? And the power supply's would need to be dedicated? Is it a matter of just replacing whats currently in the projector.....meaning just pull the old power supply and replace with the new power supply...and the same for the scanset? If the wiring is the same I think I would be able to do that.

But yet again I think I might be better off having someone that knows what their doing handle it I would really like to replace what I have with the best scanners and the best mirrors

I agree with everything Jem has said. The CT's and EMS's are top of the line stuff $$. It would be a shame to have any troubles with mounting them. If you order CT's most dealers should offer you a matching PSU for them as Jem pointed out the CT's power and depending on PSU options for the amps it might not fit. Both of these upper end scanners will get you the best of both worlds. When you do beam shows you will end up turning down the speed on them for better effect. WITH CT & EMS your bounce mirror hits will be in the same spot every time IE on the mirror. Some of the china scanners can not always hit the same small bounce mirrors every time, you will find them drifting. But every year those guys get better in china, dont count on doing 40k+ from any of them. 40k+ and your into the world of raster and other highly complex gfx.

I looked at you pics again and I cant tell whos scanners those are in your box. Does not look like PT boards or DT. So I'm thinking a clones of some kind? You have a kvant laser in you box so you might have some euro whore scanners?

Off hand some prices
Medialase MicroAmpIIX2 CTI 621HBX2 and all cables = $1600USD
DT40 Pro = $400USD
And I think the EMS7000 was around $1100?

You will need to find out you beam size to pick scanner mirrors. And keep in mind most diode lasers need big mirrors so scan speeds will be lower then listed.

Without really knowing what you're putting them into it's difficult to say whether it would be a straightforward job or not. I'll be honest, I took one look at the CT manual and chickened out . I certainly wouldn't call the installation straighforward. Rather than risk ruining such an expensive set of scanners I found a company (Stanwax Laser in the UK) that could do it for me and Re-Jig the projector at the same time. You'll certainly need to make sure that the baseplate you're mounting the power supplies on to is sufficient,and also check the air throughput of the fans as the Psu's, scanners and amps will all all generate heat.

I would suggest you contact Marc at CT Lasers and have a chat with him to see how much he would charge you to do the job
