Sounds like a UK spec machine. We use 240v gounded neutral here, along with a seperate ground.

Check the specs again, it may need a 50hz input, in which case; the problem is almost certainly power factor related. If this is the case then you may be able to change the pf capacitor for a larger value one to compensate for the line frequency difference.

It is also possible that the unit has alternative tappings internally for use with 110V. It would be worth having this checked out.

and its kinda weird how the different models use different power but most are us specs

so the plc-xf45 is a 9000ansi and it runs on 110v 15amp circut (12amps or so)
and the plc-xf46 is a 12000ansi and it runs on 110v 20amp circut (18.5amps)
and the one i have is the plc xf47 15000 ansi 200-240v 50/60hz 9.7amps

so i bought this new about a year ago fo like $15k with no lens so i don't want to modify it or ruin the warranty

and if it could be taped for 110 then wouldn't sanyo have made it an option

Just had a look at the manual and it says that it auto senses the line frequency. Do you by any chance use long extension cords? If so, are they always fully un-wound in use? Also current rating?

Looking at the specs; it highlights the confusion between kVA and Watts again ie 9.7A x 240Volts 2.328kWatts, yet it then states 1700Watts, though I'm guessing that it's 9.7A at lamp start.

or a dedicated 20amp 110v line with the stepup plugged directly in the wall (8inch cable) and the projectors nema 20 iec plugged direct into the the step up

these are the most common setups that i do but i have used extensions but normally not

and i have had trouble almost every time

the times we didnt have trouble were times when we were out side in middle of dead winter in ny

Have you had the projector checked to make sure its not drawing mega current?

no i haven't but i never blow any circuit breakers or even the fuse on the stepups

It would be worth getting it checked anyway, its better testing than guessing.

Even if it checks out OK; Just looking at the spec sheets on some transformers, and every one I've looked at says "3.3kVA transformer (1.7kVA maximum continuous, 1000Watts max inductive)" and the 5kVA units are derated by a similar value.

You've probably just been running very close to the limit for these transformers.
You can buy these tough site transformers for buttons from the UK (aside from shipping) as any commercial worker has to use one (110V CTE by law for power tools in industry) and modify for your own use, ie reverse primary and secondary. They are very well built and have headroom in their design (to meet tough BS and CE standard). On site, we use one 5kVA tx per 2 number 1600W hot air welders and they run all day every day and only get warm.
