Hi Bill, sorry I didn't realise, I will remove it right away. I only posted it there a few days ago for this member specifically, so it won't have spread far.

Hi Blaine, the header byte 8 "format code" is essentially a revision field.

    Default Copied to FTP

    I made a dir @ \software\ilda viewer\ and added the .exe there.

I named it .txt to comply with uploads.

Can anyone provide (or specify location of) files that will help me validate all known formats (revisions)?

I wrote this thing just to learn the file formats.

Code is free for the asking.

Default Can someone explain how 3D differs from 2D?

Can someone explain how 3D differs from 2D in the practical sense (not file sense)?

    Is this a focus thing?

Also, has anyone played with 3D electrically synced glasses (LCD shutters) and LASER images?

3D means you have stored the wireframe information with depth so as you rotate your image your software figures out the hidden line removal and clipping so you see a 2D projection of a view of a 3D object as from a camera print. Think of it this way, if you walk around your car and take pictures and order prints, you have a 2D representation of a 3D object on the print from a given point in space. Same with the laser software, only you can also "fly through" the object.

Go watch videos on pangolin.com for some help, and pay 15$ for a copy of ILD SOS (pronounced sauce with a french twist to it) from DRLAVA here.

SOS will let you save in 4 or more different formats, among other tricks.

PM Andrew, DRLAVA is his PL name, about ILD SOS.

And yes the goggle thing has been done, both anaglyph and polarization techniques.

Changing focus is known as beam brush, a trade name, in the industry.

    Default 2D vs. 3D

Thanks for the 2D vs. 3D info.

However, it creates more questions as to who is the director?

A 2D file can only be shown as-is, even if it represents a 3D scape.

A 3D file allows post file direction (camera angles, camera positions).

As to the googles (eye wear), I was thinking about electric LCD shutters linked to the controller / projector.

I found a google source on ebay ($13 with shipping) and I plan to hack togather something.

The 3D ILDA files I have seen actually rotate the world coordinates for every frame. i.e. they're assuming a fixed camera position/orientation, and the movement is predefined in the file. The player only needs to apply a perspective transform. The reason the data is represented in true 3D (instead of pre-rendered in 2D) is because the depth cueing may be accomplished in many ways: Z-scanner, beam brush, intensity modulation etc... it's entirely up to the player.

It's possible to apply your own transforms to move the camera in real-time, but because the ILDA format defines the points to be output, not the geometry of the artwork, that won't work very well. A much better way to do that is to apply the transforms to the geometry, then generate the points to be output using e.g. ILDA SOS.

Also consider polarised lasers, polarisation-preserving reflective screen, and simple glasses with polarising filters for each eye, rotated 90 degrees. Both shutter glasses and polarising glasses methods will work, each method has advantages/disadvantages, and both methods have been done before. Commercially, the polarising glasses seem to be much more popular, presumably it is cheaper/simpler.

    Default Thanks

Thanks weartronics, that clears up most of my 3D confusion.

Sorry, I will look at the ILDA99 package.
