Only resistance to the big green arc pumped things is when they are in the hands of people that folk think are dangerous.

Unfortunately there is one such around, which makes discussion of these machines damn near impossible as nobody wants to risk inadvertently helping them (We are talking about the sort of person who thinks crowd scanning with a big green sounds like a just wonderful plan).

Dead aggravating as I am in the throws of converting one myself, and having another few sets of eyes to look over the job would be good.

    Regards, Dan.

    Ben,

PL has just have had serious safety and personal credibility issues with the clown who started this ktp thread, and you chimed in at the wrong spot. That set off Pats Bozo alarm by accident.

    I remember you from SELEM.

have you ever heard of Laser Pointer Forums? www.laserpointerforums.com

You questions were not in line with your knowledge base, so:

    Default Thank you

Thank you all for your help! For the record, I have no intention of using any of my lasers for shows. I build/design CNC cutting systems hence the reason my smallest laser is 40w. I don't know as much about lasers below that range. An up and coming technology is to utilize green light 532nm to process new composites that are being manufactured. I want the handheld to do field testing rather than fire up my 220v 40amp monsters just for a test. Does anyone know what the practicle limit is for a handheld? I found some around 200mw. Is that the top? Thanks again for your help, and please don't file me under BOZO file!LOL!

Um.... Wrong, Pat. I know this guy personally. He lives in Summerville, SC, about 5 miles from me. He *does* have a pair of laserscopes in his garage, along with several high power CO2 systems. (Including a 300 watt unit that is connected to a CNC table for engraving that he's got set up on his glassed-in back porch at the moment.) He works on laser marking / engraving systems for a living.

Pat, I've met the guy. Several times. He's not a clueless newbie. Yes, he's not nearly as familiar with visible light lasers as we are, but I'll be he's forgotten more about CO2 lasers than any of us ever knew. Trust me on this one, the guy knows what the hell he's about. He's not going to aim a pointer at a helicopter or some football player's eyes. (Though, admittedly, it would have been better if he started a new thread instead of replying here. Oh well.)

I contacted him about an ALC-68B he had for sale back in the Spring. We talked, and I showed him the PL gallery. He was impressed with what he saw, and admitted that he had been thinking about getting into laser shows as a hobby, so I invited him and his buddy from Macon, Georgia to attend SELEM to see what we were all about. I know he was impressed with what he saw at SELEM, but evidently he also liked the hot green pointers that most people had there, so now he'd like to know where to buy one for himself.

And, of course, if you're not in the know, finding a hot green pointer these days is *very* difficult. It's true that Wicked Lasers is selling them (and they're actually legal now - not only are they CDRH certified, but they're also including safety warnings with them just like ILDA requested), but the prices are rather high.

troll alarm went off due to someone stating they own all that gear yet knew nothing about green pointers, i just found it a bit odd. He has bounced around a couple of threads stating the same thing. I apologize to him and others who might have been offended by my premature sounding of the troll alert alarm system.

I should have said, you will probably be able to locate one here...

    Smile Laser Pointers

    Hello Adam!,
it's great to hear from you! I couldn't figure out how to start a new thread. In the meanwhile I have been keeping an eye out for a decent powered krypton argon. They seem to project some very nice light. Also, I am in the middle of moving. I ended up ordering a few pointers from O-Like lasers in China. 200mw red,200mw green, and 150mw violet. I think once I have them I will be able to learn a little bit more about the visible lasers. I hope there will be a SELEM 10? It was a blast, and I learned a lot. I am in the process of selling my Laserscope 700. I picked up an 800 to replace it. I am moving to Greensboro,NC. I think a bit closer to the convention. Also, what you saw at my house was only a touch of my collection. I have 2 other garages full of lasers. That's were the 150wYag/50w green laser resides for now. Keep in touch, and thanks again!
ps: how much do you think I can get the krypton galvos, drivers, and software for? Doesn't have to be the best, just a starter set-up?

No problem Ben. But it's easy. Go to the sub-forum that you want to post in, and at the top left there is a "New Thread" button.

That they do, but they are cantankerous, heavy, and almost always require 3 phase power. (Not to mention the need for water cooling.) Oh, and you'll need a PCAOM to modulate the beam, which adds to the cost.

If you're thinking about building a projector, you might want to start off with solid state lasers first. They're easier to work with and much more forgiving. In most cases, they're cheaper as well. (The exception being DPSS blue, which is rather pricey.)

Bet your ass! SELEM 2010 is definitely a go!

A *lot* closer, actually. You'll be a little over an hour away! (Lucky...)

    - Figure $350 to $400 for a decent set of scanners, or as little as $200 for some really cheap ones. Either way, that includes the amps and PSU.
    - Figure $600 for a nice controller and software with a good library of shows and frame files. But it money is really tight, you could go with a modified sound card and some freeware software and get out for under $100.

I'd suggest going solid state for the lasers vs a mixed-gas unit. (PCAOM's are expensive, and you won't get any decent color modulation out of an ion rig without one.)

    - Figure $200 for a small DPSS green, and maybe another $200 for a red. Build your own Blu-ray for around $100, and you'd have everything you'd need to get started. Well, not everything...
    - Figure another $200 for mounts, dichros, switches, fans, and stuff. (Got any thick aluminum plate laying around that you can use for an optical table?)

Put it all inside an old computer tower case, and you're off to the races!

    Adam
