That sort of reminds me of the Sidewinder Laser Synaesthesia show that Tim Walsh (LaserWizzard) put together on the Lasergraph DSP (at least, I'm pretty sure that's what he used).
The sound you hear from the speakers is the same signal that is being sent to the scanners. Thus it's always in perfect sync, and while it's a very odd form of music, it has it's own beauty.
