I think the burning smell would be normal, as long as it's not billowing smoke. The first time I got my liconix HeCd to fire, it had an odd smell for about 5 hours of running.

On second thought, does anyone know what the flashing thing on the hour meter that looks like the attached image means ?

means the hour meter is working, nothing more

NO, DO NOT REMELT Cd !!! AS IN NO DO NOT REMELT THE CD UNTIL YOU HAVE VERIFIED THE PSU IS WORKING AND DONE THE PROCEDURES IN THE MANUAL FOR CALIBRATION AND MEASURED THE STABLE OUTPUT POWER AFTER 20 MINUTES.

YEP, HES SHOUTING FOR A REASON. REMELT = LAST RESORT FOR BLOCKED BORE/OLDER TUBES

DO NOT SHUT DOWN DURING A REMELT CYCLE IF YOU LIKE YOUR LASER WORKING !

    Steve
I tried one and then shut it down due to the lack of fans and the burning smell, although thankfully by this point not much cadmium had vaporized anyway. I'd rather have the dead tube than a house fire .

Thanks for the warning Steve. the tube has 134 hours on it, when do you expect that I would need to do a remelt ? Had 92 hours on it when I got it, made in 1992 .

@ Jason : No burning smell when I run mines, but my whole tube isn't wrapped in what appears to be some sort of ceramic wool. Only the Helium heater on mines has this. The tube is bare except at the cathode and cadmium heater.

Ok, it made the journey from storage area to my car. I'll borrow a document scanner tonight.
