I suffer from the Dunning–Kruger effect... daily.

Just wanted to say that tonight i took an old NEC 16x (i think) DVD drive, took out optics, took out module (it had 2, i think 1 IR and 1red), both had 3 pins ? most of the time 1 has 4pins and 1 has 3, anyway. connected it, prepare the wires with lasorb and enough solder, soldered on quickly (first removing pcb/flatcable with one well placed drop of solder and pulling with a tweezer in one go. Then soldering on the wires with the lasorb. Turning the offset, LIGHT ! Yeah. Then used a little bruteforce to press the diode in (wires and housing were in the way so use a screwdriver flatback to push it in.

Well it works, will have to measure it, but with DDL's nice glass lens option had a nice dot and very low divergence.

Now i have tried. I can give a new batch of LOC's and maybe Mccarrots Sony diodes a go.... ;-)

Give me a call, maybe this weekend..

    Hobbybob,
Its good to hear you got a diode harvested still working. It may seem simple, but it is rather challenging.
