Just to expand upon that, its basically a plasma cutter (but without the compressed air spray). Here is a link that was discussed in another thread in the past few days:

Just to show what the possibility of focusing a laser can do. And its pretty cool at that!

One wants to know where they got a fast "Z" or focus scanner, that has been a problem for a long, long, long, time.

    my guess is deformable mirrors.

back in 78 I saw a GDC02 laser blow a 8" square in 1" steel in about 5 seconds at well over 100 yards.

Thats exactly what I asked in the other thread:

In order to take those photos I'd assume the exposure was set pretty long, considering the fact that changing the focal length of the laser (ie movement of a lens to change the third dimension of the image) would be a relatively slow process (compared to the movement of the galvos). Its a great proof of concept, now only to find a way to make it safe, inexpensive, and able to reproduce images at a much higher resolution (without flicker).

How much power is needed to make plasma with a focused beam?

Right around there the AF had a gas dynamic laser flying on a 707 series Boing airframe, its at the National Museum of the US Air Force, and I got a walkthrough of it once. Flying deathtrap with all sorts of open beam paths and plumbing etc.

It shot down many air to air missiles aimed at the plane.

Remember, the target location, tracking, focusing, construction materials, and funding are what has really improved. Not to mention the proliferation of the threat.

COIL was first developed in 1977 or so.

the plate was mounted to a boxcar moving down a track. They were actually testing the targeting system but decided to give us a show at the same time

hint-PAWACCWPBFLA or was it ALFBPWCCAWAP... no more hints...it is decipherable.

deciphered by skilled keyword search. The lab has been renamed twice since then.

Wright Patterson Air Force Base Materials Lab, Special weapons , project ALL

ALLTHOUGH IT would not shock me in the least if there were parallel programs.
