Just like Evil said, KClO4 really is not all that dangerous alone. You might be thinking about Potassium Chlorate. Which is much more dangerous and isn't really used much more in fireworks. Especially in mixtures which require sulfur.

Take some Potassium Chlorate and sulfur, mix the two together in small equal parts. And hit it with a hammer. BANG! It explodes.

Exactly. Chlorate's are pretty much harmless without a fuel. You do have to be very careful what you mix them with though. Oxidation creates heat and if your fuel is easily oxidized it can create a sustained chain reaction just by being mixed.

Here is an example of hot KClO3 when sucrose is introduced.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUens...eature=related

Altiods work great for this experiment!

Nice! I love the mortars! Are those custom built?

    Where is the laser projector?

That was last year's show -
Mortar racks are custom jobs, ordered online - shoot standard "consumer" shells.

Somewhere () I have this year's photos, and it DID include laser graphics! I also added two additional 25-shot mortar racks, all electrically fired from a 12-cue firing system.
(It used to be 24-cue, but one of the slats burned up last year...woops...)

    Frickin' expensive hobbies.....

Yep, I got on the Skylighter mailing list about the same time I discovered this site...in fact, it was the idea of adding a laser to my fireworks shows that got me here!! I NEVER dreamed the laser aspect would go THIS far!!

I haven't ventured into home-brew shells yet - I really don't have the space to safely go into that type of production.

However, I have fabricated several different types of mines using flying-fish fuse and some creative application of Cremora coffee creamer... they kind of smell like fresh baked gunpowder-flavored cookies when they go off

There are a few more photos from that show in my gallery...

For those of us in the USA:

According to the FBI, you might be a terrorist if -------> you buy or make big firecrackers.
