Red face Redline beamscan problems (Freezing controller)

I know a couple members in thr forum have some experience with Redline beamscan systems.. I was curious is any of you may have seen symtoms similiar to mine.

I aquired a single head and XYP-1000 controller a couple months back.

The first problem I have had is when the diffraction grating (DG) engages.
When the DG armature is dropped the controller seems to freeze.

So when I scroll through the pre-pogrammed scenes.... as soon as I get to a scene that engages the the DG, the controller freezes and I need to recycle power.

I was just doing a show last Friday and my controller started freezeing and resetting on it's own... regardless of the DG..

    Any idea's?
Is there something typical about these devices that causes this?

Thank you for your time!! =)

    Default Caps

I would change out all the electrolytic caps in the power supply. change out all caps except for the big mail filter caps. Its cheep to do and they probably need to be replaced. Good luck !!

replace the pulse protection diode or cap across the DG motor RIGHT NOW.

Your seeing back EMF pulses from the stored energy in the coil.

Then replace the big electrolytic caps.

So last night I pulled the controller from my road case and placed it on my bench...

It works great now! But I did not do anything yet... =/

    I was suspecting moisture issues..

The first time I started seeing problems was when I was running some shows in my garage over the summer... It was extremely humid.

I had problems this last Friday when I had a show at a school... The morning I packed up the equipment it was cold and wet out.

By any chance do these caps that you suggest changing... are they more susptable to moisture or is the whole board suseptable?

    Steve,
I did change the diode a couple months back but that didn't seem to fix the problem =/

Thanks for your input guys.... I know this is som old school equipment =)

If caps are going bad they can change value under cold or hot conditions. Moisture could probably effect small surface mount components. If it happens again , swap the shutter with the dg shutter and see what happens. If it happens again it might not be the dg shutter. Anyway i bought one of those systems years ago . It coast me 750.00 . I bought it from MWK Industries . I bought a 12 mw hene that coast me 450.00 for hene and supply. LOL In those years a 35 mw green dpss was 1500.00 !!! Ok man enjoy !!
