My second RGB laser projector build

Hi everyone!
I'm biulding my second RGB projector The first one was small 30mW 650/532/405nm with crappy dichros, you can see it here: link. Now I started building something bigger!

Galvos will be GSI G100PD with GSI amplifier board (the same that I used in my first build).
Red laser will be double 650nm 20x DVD-RW diode modules combined with PCBS from DVD too. The diodes runs at 350mA. My power meter says that combined beam power is 440mW but it's not so much I think. I would not be surprised if this meter was not calibrated or even not good for 650nm, but it's still very useful Below some pictures of this red module. The first two pics shows just testing if this PCBS will work at all, the last two pics shows finished module.

I have two green chinese modules, one is 150mW and the second was 30mW but I got it with broken laser didoe and I put there 1W diode so it should do about 100mW max. I don't have a PSU for that module yet. I haven't decided which one to use in the projector yet. It depends on the needed green power. Below some pictures showing yellow test and one pic showing these two green modules.

Today I made one dichro mount, you can see it in the attached pics. I think I've done a good job Now i'm going to make one remaining dichro mount and two HR mirr0r mounts (without that big hole) and i'm waiting for aluminum plate for the optic table.

I don't know what laser to use as blue. I was planning to use a 70mW 488nm argon that I have but after I bought an EOM it turned out that the laser is not polarized I have to figure out how to modulate it but I have no idea. If I put there a polarizer I will loose half of power so it's not good idea. Using mechanical modulator is not a good idea neigther... 473nm is too expensive for me, so I'm stuck with 405nm, but I really don't like that violet :P

Is there any way to upload more than five pictures per post and generate thumbnails, or I have to use some external hosting for images?

^You could mechanically modulate your argon with a third galvo.. It won't allow for anything but TTL, but it does work.

But
1. I don't have third galvo at the moment.
2. I'm afraid that it will be too slow.
I'm not planning to use anything more than TTL so maybe I'll try it if I won't have any better idea. Now i'm fucused on all that mechanical stuff and putting together RGY.

I went and read about your first project and I am very impressed.


The second one is coming along nicely. Thank you for posting the pics of your mirror/filter mounts.. I think I finally understand how they work.


Are your diodes in any type of heat sink enclosure before they were mounted?

While I haven't tried it myself, I would think that a galvo that matches the speed of the set you are using in the projector would be able to keep up without issue.. I know that some folks here have experience with galvo blanking, perhaps they will chime in on this.

How about polarizing that argon (and modulate it with an AOM) and use some 405 to make up for the lost power? Would give you a wider colour gamut to boot, and Blurays are so cheap there's no reason you shouldn't go for them. IMO, 405 makes a good addition to any RGB arsenal.

For sure. Adding 405 can really enhance the color saturation, and at practically no cost.
