I started another thread when I bought a Cyan last week and I appologise if you think this is a "double thread" but I thought that it might be nice to have another place for the more technical details of this laser.

The one I got puts out a nice 20mW of 488 but the problem is that the RS232 communication does not work.

http://www.newport.com/store/product...8083&lang=1033

A pic of it running with a bit of smoke and a 405 and a 473 as comparison (the PCB in the middle is the controller).
The 473 is the first beam from the top and actually looks more cyan due to crappy camera and its 100mW, the 488 is in the middle.
The beam is extremely thin and has very good collimation.

I will try to exchange the 3,3V to 5V RS232 transreceiver ic MB3221I for another from TI and se if that helps.

Anyone have any insights into the inner workings of this laser?
I would have guessed doubled 976nm but the manual states maximum possible emissions of 488 and 986nm?

What kind of optics and crystals are in there? I guess there is a very advanced TEC-controller that keeps it stable.
I love to learn some more about this nice piece of gear!

This laser is maybe nice for holography and biomed applications but not that useful for lasershows since it has no external modulation inputs and looks far from "hackable".
It is brand new and has only a few hours of run time.
I may keep it in the "collection" or trade it or maybe open it up in the name of science and to please you guys!

What do you think?
