As I was in mild to medium level pain / discomfort from the laser hit I got, I would have gone after the kid with my 4- "D" cell maglite and just dropped his sorry ass right then and there had I been able to see better.
As it is, I had a VERY difficult time driving home after the rave, every time an oncoming car's headlights were in my face, I had problems staying on the road.
The way I see this, I acted in self defense as well as the defense of the rest of the ravers from the injury potential being repeated.
I have been talking with the (former) pointer owner via email. He seeks a fair resolution to my taking of his pointer in order to avoid the obvious attempt at suing me for the loss of his property. He thinks I should replace his 100+ mW pointer. He claims it was over $500, but we all know pointers are about 1 USD per mW, so I don't know when or where this kid bought his pointer, but I have a problem with that value being associated with that power level as I had a 50 mW pointer that cost my friend 45 bucks including shipping a year ago...
Another problem with the kids desire is that the style and type he had would not be legal for even myself to purchase or possess in this country. I would almost love for this to go to court and have some local Arizona judge try to order me to violate a federal law....
CNN would be very interested at that point I am sure.
I guess next time I will bring the cops into the rave and start pressing charges each and every time see a pointer in the eyes...
As a CDRH variance holder who took a beam in the eye from this kid's pointer more than once in a matter of a few minutes, I will not stand for this kind of injury happening at my shows. The last several beams I have looked into directly were the result of high powered laser pointers, not my own lasers.
I may need some friendly letters of support from fellow American laserists to prove the danger this idiot was placing upon myself and others.
For the record, security does take pointers from kids, and almost never gives them back, yet now this is different because I am not a security guard. I only have state and federal paperwork that proves I know a little about laser safety and the laws about the safe and public use of lasers....
go figure.
My laser headahce the kid gave me on Friday night is gone, only to be replaced by another.
Would I change what I did if I could go back and do this all over again?
You bet! I would have had my tech lead me through the dance floor and I would have kicked the living shit out of the kid and taken his pointer anyways once he was on the ground.
He hit me first, with a laser beam that can be proven to have been dangerous to my vision. ( it burned hands, so of course it can burn eyes)
Either way, that pointer was being terminated.
Even if I handed it off to my state laser inspector, the kid would never have gotten it back, and then would have also been in trouble with my state laser regulatory agency, LOL...
Hey Karl, You did the right thing in the interest of public safety, you were the LSO on site therefore the authority...Great Job...I would have done the same thing.
Please dont take this the wrong way and Im not sure if it is a rumor or the truth, and If it is I apologize to every one and if it is not a rumor I would be curious about response.
Did you sell the Laserscope Vag Burner to PRODJALLEN? Because he is an accident waiting to happen.
Once again NO OFFENSE INTENDED.
