I just called Karl, and implored him to get a good retinal exam.
If he has a fresh lesion, and its big enough to be photographed, it will be documented.

End quote:
Steve is terrified and concerned, not proud. The bible says one should be meek when possible, but yet turn around and stand up for your rights. This is one of the later. What is a annoyance today may turn up to be a issue in the future as the eyes age. Remember that when possible, the brain remaps around the damage, but that does not count when the truck hits you as you cross the sidewalk because you have peripheral damage.

OK, just got a call from Karl, the drops from the exam haven't wore off yet, but he has had both a digital retinal scan and a manual scan. Clean bill of health except for some serious muscle strain, which the eye doctor says is normal in patients who have had laser eye surgery or other traumatic stress to the eye. It will be another week before we know about the muscles/strain going away, but right now he has a preliminary good result. This means no detectable lesions. Emphasis on DETECTABLE, that does not mean damage did not occur. Major league pain and eye strain did occur, to the point he has trouble reading or driving. The exam itself is stressful and is painful when the drugs wear off.
And one heck of a bill to submit to his insurance plus some lost work days.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt & selling it in a garage sale.
I talked to with Allen before his infamous thread was even created or before he even got the laser.. He did not get it from anyone on this board.

Unfortunately, doing the right thing doesn't preclude legal liabilities. After all, no good deed goes unpunished.
However, I'm sure a lot of people would support you if you do get hit with a lawsuit.
Sorry for the bumping this thread, but in all honesty, I highly doubt Karl will be sued.
If I remember correctly, an illegal item (or, in legal terms, "contraband") generally holds no legal value. Thus, it's not illegal to destroy something that has "zero" value! Although it is possible to file suits in a small claims court without a lawyer, a (reasonable) judge will mostly likely reject the case if the kid decides to sue you. If anything, you could probably sue the kid and make him pay for your medical costs.
However, there is one thing I really want to know: was any force involved? In other words, did security folks ask the kid "nicely" to hand over the laser, or did they have to literally wrestle it from him? There may be more police involvement in the latter case.

Hi mccarrot,
Where did you get that no laser pointer sign, I would like to have one posted at the door of a club I'm working in when my laser is in use. But I would like to use the no sign but have it say a friendly note that say "No use of hand held laser pointers this evening"
They are welcome bring them in at any other event night but I don't want them in use while I have my laser running. If someone gets hurts by someone elses laser pointer I don't want it coming back on me. Staff is also going to be asking patron to put laser pointer away.
Its not a big issue at this venue but I want to be really clear and the staff 100% agrees.
