Lasermirror coating

Hey guy's.
I have a question. On a lasermirror, the refflections layer is mostly dampt on. Does any one know how this techniek works? I would like to coat my own big lasermirrors for special effect. I don't want line or grid mirrors, but standard reflection mirror.
Maybe there is some sort of home project or something on the web???

Google aluminized mirror, vacuum deposition, overcoated aluminum; telescope aluminizing (why build when you can buy)


Basicly a large chamber is built an pumped down to a very high vacuum, a tungsten heater matrix then evaporates the aluminum and a silicon monoxide coating is laid down to protect the aluminum and enhance the reflectivity.

The vacuum level is high enough to require a diffusion or turbopump as well as a roughing pump.

Forget about chemical silvering unless your really into suffering and wasting large amounts of time and money.
