from that picture it looks like the output transistor exploded? (hole in the middle?)

I looked at where the potentiometer goes, never looked down to the bottom of the picture.

He's right, it needs a new transistor. At that point in time, its easier to get another driver, unless the numbers left on the transistor cross to something for sale by RF Parts inc.

Which one? The round one with 4 connectors? That looks like a sharpie "dot" in real life... at least to me. There is a similar mark on the beard to the right and above, almost in the middle of the board.

Zooming in does not look like a explosion on top of the big power transistor. Might just be glue of some sort. Try it.
