New type of mid air laser show

I just watched a program on National Geographic channel called Secret World Of Fireworks. It was about the Zambelli fireworks company and their displays.

There was a brief segment in the program showing Dr Hideo Saito of Keio University and a new laser system he has developed. Unfortunately there was only about 30 seconds of footage, it stated the technology was top secret and said no more. But it showed a couple of violet lasers projecting images and these images were literally floating in mid air and scanning around a room. No screens were used and the narrator specifically said that the lasers terminate on nothing more than thin air.

Looked absolutely amazing, would love to know how that works.

For those in the UK, it is being repeated on National Geographic +1 at 2am. But like I say, the lasers are mentioned and shown for no more than 30 seconds about 10 minutes before the end of the hour long program...

Very impressive but I think you need really REALLY BIG lasers to convert air into plasma

That is pretty simple, it is an XYZ scanner set, with the Z being focal point, and a high rep rate, high energy Q-Switched laser. When you focus it down, it gets to the air breakdown point and forms a plasma in the air. This can be done with a pulsed YAG laser of >20mJ 10ns.

Something such as THIS would work great!
