Does anyone know how Ti:Sapphs work? whats their wavelength range and efficiency? Is building one at home feasible? thanks.

Hello,
You can build one on a breadboard with Thor Labs or newport componants and find a crystal on e bay but the pump laser (and optics sets) are the problems. You need a few wats of green to get it going! And the BRF for tuning is also expensive. When you are done you should be able to tune from about 700 nm to near 1000 nm...all invisible output! What do you need that for anyway? The linewidths can be broad and eatelons are also expensive...
