=General Overview= Welcome to the PL Laser-Wiki, if you have permissions to add/edit content, please do. Please be as accurate and up-to-date as you can with your content - That being said, in the future, PL members can go in and update any outdated-info, fix broken links, etc. If you need any help with using the wiki / making Edits, feel free to ask our Illustrious Admin.

=Current Progress= This first PL Wiki-Section is meant to be a test.

It is meant to be a central repository for links-to all (Worldwide) Laser Regulatory-body, Contact Info, Laser Safety Regulations, and general Laser Safety information-resources.

Initially, the intent of this first wiki is solely links to the 'Regs-themselves', and the relevant Contact(s) Info. Future cross-linked wikis are encouraged, with 'deeper, expanded info', (ie: How to Properly fill out an FAA 7140, links to online topographical and aeronautical maps, etc, etc.) Please, do not 'pollute' this wiki, with such 'expanded info'; rather, branch-off, and link-back, as-relevant. Corrections and Updates, however, are welcomed; Please, 'verify correctness', before saving-edits.

1/5/11 - Added UK and Netherlands links - Thanks to Jem, White-Light and Mccarrot for the info… Please edit / add-to, as need-be, but remember, for all 'expanded info', please create a *new* page, for-such, and link-back here, under headings / sub-headings. The 'rationale' for this is to keep this Main Page, simple, clean, and concise, like a 'Table of Contents'.

1/28/11 - Added 'Laser Pointer Safety.com' linx

5/11 - Added 'Safety Training / Regs-compliance Assistance Resources' and 'Canadian Regs'

6/23/11 - Updated US Western Region FAA Contacts

9/16/11 - Added FAA / USAF video on laser cockpit-illumination

3/16/12 - PL-Member 'chad' test-pilots the 'Laser-Source Info Section'.. Yay, Chad!

6/1/12 - Updated US Western Region FAA Contacts

=Laser Safety Overviews= In 'general' / for starters, here are some good laser-safety articles from ILDA (International Laser Display Association) (though some of it is 'dated', but still fairly-relevant..): http://www.laserist.org/Laserist/Safety.html

Additionally, this PDF is very-helpful for 'beginners' (simplified, but thorough, 'overview' of the US Regs, and Laser Safety-principles, etc…)<br /> http://www.fda.gov/downloads/MedicalDevices/DeviceRegulationandGuidance/GuidanceDocuments/UCM119257.pdf

Here, too, are some good 'easy to digest' external-articles in Wikipedia: one on “Laser Safety” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_safety ,<br /> and one on “Audience Scanning” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audience_scanning

REQUIREMENTS REGARDING LASER EQUIPMENT SOLD IN CANADA

Legal requirement

Laser equipment sold in Canada must comply with the Radiation Emitting Devices (RED) Act - text available at: http://laws.justice.gc.ca/eng/R-1/index.html

Section 4 indicates specifications regarding the sale, lease and importation of radiation emitting devices into Canada. The onus is on the manufacturer/importer of the product to comply with the RED Act.

Engineering requirements

The full Regulations text can be found at http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/R-1/C.R.C.-c.1370/index.html. <br /> Parts VII and VIII of Schedule II are obsolete and will be replaced by Proposed Laser Regulations that will apply to all applications based on accessible beam characteristics similar to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements or the European International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Laser Standard.

For the time being, while there may not be specific Canadian laser regulations for every-type of projector / application, it is recommended that manufacturers/importers at-least comply with one of the following standards to ensure compliance with the RED Act and any future proposed regulations:

i) IEC 60825-1 Ed. 2.0 (2007) “Safety of laser products - Part 1: Equipment classification and requirements” available at http://webstore.iec.ch/webstore/webstore.nsf/Standards/IEC%2060825-1?openDocument

ii) FDA 21CFR1040.10 (2007) “Performance Standards for laser products” accessible at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfCFR/CFRSearch.cfm?FR=1040.10 , as well as “Laser Notice No. 50” accessible at http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/DeviceRegulationandGuidance/GuidanceDocuments/ucm094361.htm

FOR LASER LIGHT SHOW PERFORMANCES

For Outdoor laser shows to be compliant, ShoCos need to submit the “Notice of proposal to conduct outdoor laser operations” found on Transport Canada’s website: http://www.tc.gc.ca/wwwdocs/Forms/26-0754_0910-01_BO.pdf
