Default Alternative ideas for LEM-bigger and better?

Hi folks, It's interesting that we usually get paid (sometimes very well) to display wonderful laser shows for other events that charge entry fee's, and here we are discussing paying quite a high fee to play with our lasers with just each other. Maybe we should re-evaluate this and just throw a freakin rave party anyway, while we have the space, and invite a bunch of fun folks to pay us to entertain them=) Or better yet let's partner up with an existing rave or other party that would love to have some lasers and then we can at least do a "free" show and not have to pay $75 to be there to enjoy our free show. Then we don't have to promote and deal with organizing the party and DJ's, etc...and MANY more folks will enjoy the wonderful eye candy which I don't like to keep limited to just a few of us...I mean all that work and effort and TIME spent for just a dozen or so laser geeks seems wasteful to me...and we should share and expose our creative art talents to more of the world. Kinda like ILDA does on the cruise ship meetings to share their laser love with the rest of the ships audience, I helped perform a show the first year they did this and it was a blast. I love laser shows and hanging out with my fellow laser geeks, but personally I don't have that much time nor energy to spend 2 days/nights or even a full day at this event, so I was intending to just come in the afternoon for the Saturday night, like a typical gig. To pay $75 for just one partial day/night AND bring my 3W RGB laser with fog/haze (I won't stay if DF50 oil crackers are running, no exceptions for my lungs and gear) seems like an expensive deal. I can afford it, just difficult to justify it. Hence I like the idea of "donating" our laser talents to combine it with an existing event (think Burningman guys, full of free donated art and lasers). Heck we could even light up the Burningman outdoor decompression party which happens for 1 night near downtown LA in a park with tons of music, DJ's, sound systems, art, tons of PEOPLE who pay to get in...I'm sure they would not say NO to a bunch of free laser shows, literally thousands of dollars of free art donated to a good cause, and it won't limit our photon exposure to our few dozen or so confirmed folks. The only bad part is this Bman Decom event happens in October so we'd have to postpone quite a while. That said, I'm in no rush for LEM to happen, I just found out about it a couple weeks ago, I'm patient, and good things come to those who wait. I think we can make this a better event but I won't push anyone since Jon has given so much of his time to invest into organizing LEM. I just wanted to express some thoughts with everyone, maybe others feel similar and that it's not such a good idea to pay such an exorbitant price to rent a space in this greater depression economy we are entering, and not rush it in 2 weeks? Who else is going to rent that space if we refuse to pay their jacked up price? How hard is it to find other spaces for half the cost? Btw folks, for anyone that ever lost all their text after typing into a website form like this...write your drafts on your PC first, like in Word or Outlook which saves your text every few minutes.

Nice idea, but one word ... liability. The benefit of gathering together is that the show doesn't have to go on. And we can enjoy what everyone does without the interruption of the general public involved. And we don't have to worry about a drunk idiot tripping over a hose or umbilical, or setting their beer on a power supply, or poking their hands into a projector box, or putting their beer bottle into a beam (for example).

You do mention a great opportunity for another LEM though. Perhaps a venue planned for a decompression party can be made available for a few days before the event for a private LEM to happen, then a show for the house to pay for the LEM party time (making it free for the LEMers).

As long as they are willing to Sign the Liability Waiver / Hold-Harmless Agreement, with Names, Addy, etc, and are over 18.. I don't see why they would be any different from a PL-members Guest / GF, etc - again - them, too: As long as they are willing to Sign - No Sign? No Enter / No Laser BlingBling. cool?

Do it Adam, compared to east coast LEM's there will be a lack of Adams.

Laser (the acronym derived from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation) is a spectacular manifestation of this process. It is a source which emits a kind of light of unrivaled purity and intensity not found in any of the previously known sources of radiation. - Lasers & Non-Linear Optics, B.B. Laud.

how unfortunate that I'm in college!

I'm new to the hobby so I wouldn't have too much to contribute though.
    perhaps next year!

(...can't believe how cheap printing has gotten... )

Starting this Wed., we will need to get those who are 'for-sures' to PM-me your T-shirt size, for at least the Pango T's we are fixing to have.... I will determine final 'count' on Fri, when we'll submit to Pango for shipping.... Most gracious of them...

Also: How many folks that are "Definitely" coming, are bringing their own rigs / show-content? Let us know...

    Let's keep this stoked, Kats!
