Hmmm dont get the logic behind that as well. This kind of crap happens, will happen and did happen. Here is my 'favorite', its a 2W greenie, and this vid was from 2008...

Dont know if this was posted here before.

However, I think it is better to stay present instead of leave and ignore. Because you leave, things wont get better.

Please, think it over again - Cheers!

thanks guys .... I have chilled a bit now ... maybe it was a bit knee jerk ....

But my concern over they way that lasers are being mishandled is growing on a daily basis ... the "Wicked Sith weapon" pushed me over the edge .... what is the point of it apart from swinging 2W of beams around in an uncontrolled manner ?

many kids are going to get hurt with these and it will effect all of us !

Now im not sure if this post about 5W laser was actually 5 watts .... but when he is talking about glue melting on the galvos it sounds like its "HOT" ... i am only concerned for the guys safety ....

Many years ago when hi power Gas lasers were unafordable by most of us we had to make do with 1mw Phillips HeNe tubes and other low power devices even then safety was always at the top of list .... every so often technology has stepped up a gear and made bigger lasers more affordable ... unfortunaly in recent times it hasnt just stepped up a gear .... its been retro fitted with the starship enterprises gearbox ...

I feel fortunate that i was able to learn about lasers in a slow controlled fasion, improving my projectors gradually ... increasing the power .... learning about the individual components and how they work ... building in safety along the way ...

Now it seem anyone can purchase a 5W tin box .... and blast the world, not knowing if its safe or not .

I really dont want to see anyone get hurt .... plus i dont want to see the laser industry get hurt ...

Perhaps its good we are here to educate and guide new laserists in the right direction, although i fear that few will listen when they have bought a Laserworld tin box and because laserworld says 5W is safe.... it must be

I think that i will be a bit tougher now with New laserists .... many times i have turned a blind eye ( or even my remaing good one ) we went though the ProDJalien episode with a bit of tough love .... but to no avail ... but not many people have the option to get a Lscope ...

but now the tin box laser companies are moving into the higher power ranges and it brings afordable danger to more people

So folks you still have to put up with me for a while yet ( "quit" retracted )

    all the best ..... Karl

EDIT: also thanks guys ... i have just been reading the replys that members have responded to on the 5W? thread http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/...read.php/14622

thats exactly what we need ... to be educational but at the same time making the poster aware of what danger they could be imosing on themselves and others ... we need to keep this up as we are going to see more and more posts like this.

Perhaps you should share your concerns with Pat Murphy and John C. O'Hagan.

    I've met O'Hagan.

Whatever happened to NRPB, did they morph into something else?

Good. I've been hankering after a RGB scanner for a while now and found PL whilst trying to find out if any of these Chinese things on fleabay were any good. Been lurking here for a fair while now but only signed up a week or so ago as I now think I may now have the beginning of an inkling of a clue about what makes these things tick. Whilst I'm still struggling with a lot of the acronyms that you guys throw around with casual abandon, places like this are invaluable for folks like me getting started.

I intended my 1st post to be an intro with a lot of annoying Qs, but I think it's better spent here

    Back to lurking for now...

Hi Jon, and welcome to Photonlexicon .

Don't forget your first job should be to fill out your profile so we can see whereabouts in the World you are. This will allow us to give information that is relevant to the country in which you reside.

Feel free to post your opening gambit whenever you're ready.

    Regards

    Jem

P.S., welcome back Karl. I knew the threat of a hug from Soffy would have the desired effect

The quick answer is Jon most of the fleaby lasers aren't great quality.

NRG are quite decent for the price. There were a couple reviewed on here some time ago.

Your other options are to build with quality components or get someone to build for you, or to buy off the shelf from a top company such as Kvant or RGB laser systems. Its all down to budget and ambition.

Most of all, safety 1st. Lasers aren't toys although splashing light around seems harmless, it can have seriousness consequences that aren't immediately apparent due to the fact that eyes don't have pain sensing nerves in the back of the retina. Its that, that Karl is concerned about above.

Suspected as much about the eBay ones - I won't hijack Karl's thread with this, I'll start my own soon(ish).

In my previous job we flew around with decidedly eye-unsafe lasers, so not coming into this field a total newbie

Oh, profile fleshed out a bit for Jem

Karl, glad you decided to stick it out. The reasons you mentioned for leaving are the same reasons you are needed! If you find responses to a post lacking, by all means speak up to become more a part of the conversation, not less.
