Very cool but surely VERY dangerous?

Could be done with a CO2 tube? Yes?

Stick yer mitt in the plamsa and have a hand with a hole in it

When you do it with co2, you use a box of swirling carbon dust. Co2 does not do air breakdown unless you have KILOWATTS.

Hmmm... That's not too far off the mark, considering that the display creates free-air plasma (albeit for a very short period of time).

As Aijii said above: this thing is damn dangerous! (but still very cool...)

So if you ran the laser at 30KHz (for 30Kpps scanning?) would the sound it emits also be 30KHz? That might make it virtually inaudible.

Considering that each little "snap" you hear is a tiny shockwave caused by the formation (and rapid expansion) of a very small ball of free-air plasma, the real question you should ask yourself is: if you had 30,000 tiny firecrackers going off every second, would you be able to hear the sound? (Answer: hell yes!)

Yeah I thought about that, too. But no matter how loud the noise is, if the frequency is 30kHz, you simply cannot hear it. I'm sure it's a little more complicated then a sine wave, but the pitch does seem to coincide with the laser repetition rate.
