Also, don't make it a requirement to find someone who is into the same sorts of things you are. Your soul mate doesn't have to be a laser geek for you to be happy. (Marie isn't, and we've been together nearly 24 years now.) Just make sure you have something in common so you've got something you can do together.

As far as facebook is concerned, I have no interest in it. Several people here have mentioned privacy concerns, and I agree with this. More to the point, however, is something that Pat mentioned. If you want to keep in touch with your friends, pick up the phone! Or better yet, invite them over for dinner. If they're far away, plan a vacation and go visit them. That's how you stay in touch with people.

I'm a 40 year old stuck in Ft Wayne In, and at least you have ice fishing. No lakes around here and the rivers flow too fast to ice up, except the one that is the city water supply river, and it ices only at the dams.. The place is flat, so biking is not fun.. Hiking in the winter is discouraged by the local cops.

I went to a bar Friday night, only to be told by the underage waitresses that every woman in Ft Wayne marries early or leaves ASAP as there is nothing else to do here, and at my age I was out of luck unless I moved. I was also informed that the local church might be able to find me a rare, recently converted lesbian, but they are in short supply and there is a waiting list..

I hate this place. Too far from any airport, and way far away from any of the places I used to do consulting or repairs. Only one of my friends has visitied since I came here, and he stayed for all of 30 minutes.. 4.5-6 hour drive to see my family, 2.5 hour drive to see my nearest friend.

If it were not for PL, I'd be pretty much alone too. The guys at work all go home to wives or church groups.. And are very much whipped and dont speak. Their idea of social interaction is to play some &^%$ combat game for a hour every lunch, and that is it. The same &^%$ exact burning Pripyat scenerio every day. The local IEEE meets maybe once a year, and there is only one hamfest once a year, and even the ham radio operators around here are stoically silent...

Oh and from the moment I got here, they were very adament that I was not welcome, because my division of the company is the boss's personal R&D toy, and they figure the R&D money is best spent boosting their paychecks. All but one of them agreed it was in their best interests to make my life rough. Nothing personal, but they made it very clear I'm not wanted. At least they admitted it..

At least the Amish wave once in a while when the Elders are not around..

I had my company stationed there for 6 years and even managed my employee's band there for a couple years. Club scene? Hmmm... Never seen so much cocaine and crack abuse than in Kenosha. Everything I've seen there is the definition of poverty and filth and I've been to about 30 or so bars in the area and they are all.... Yuck!

And yes, I'm not looking for girls who are into electronics or anything. Just girls who's main goal in life is not the latest tattoo or piercing. So far I have nothing in common with the women I meet. I've never seen so many frustrated and miserable women than in Wisconsin. Just having nothing more than a friendly conversation is impossible.

As for friends and picking up the phone and inviting them over.... I'm all for that! Now, If I could only find some locally.

As for local friends, our young friends at the Gem and Mineral Society are about 58+. You are welcome out west. I say make a road trip, chad is in colorado, I am south in new mexico, a bunch in cali, platinum in PDX, LASERMAN532 in bend, and slickrick, laseralex, and gooeygus up in seattle. (I don't like washington, but that is a personal problem). You are always welcome to stop by lots of neat stuff near-by, but bring your passport we are next to mexico . Steve you are also welcome 5800 feet, and I have an ICOM HF rig sitting here (well and we can visit Karl & Swamidog).

As for Facebook, my mother bugs me too much to join... so HELL NO!
