How is that possible? The p71,s where 100um emitter and the higher powered version is only 40um? Also the blue,s have a smaller emitter and what are those in size? Good move from daniell to start collecting a doing some measuring and testing on all diodes that are available

manufacturer tells me the P71 & P73 are 40um. if you have a source that conflicts with this then please share it here.

Manufacturer as in Mitsubishi? Or (sorry) a secondary source .. again (sorry) will they produce the spec-sheet in writing ? .. I'm sure it could be altered by an unscrupulous supplier looking to make a buck. I'm not trying to be the 'doubting-thomas' just very very cautious in these days and times of this economy.. some people are getting very inventive on scams.. Iwould be in for 2 pcs if verified the emitter size was the same as the G71.. wait .. above post says P71 and P73 .. is that G71 and P73 ?? I'm confused now ..

I don't believe that the G71 has a 100um stripe, tests I did with the Optima lens in post 40, which can only do diodes with stripes up to 50um, showed only a minimal loss of 3.5% over the raw beam power. If the stripe were 100um the losses would have been much higher. I would have to agree with andy on this one, questionable would be the G73 emitter size.

Thanks solarfire, they are for sure not 100um then. When it comes to believing i,m with steve on this one. Daniell has a few diodes to compare including the HL6388MG. That one has for sure a smaller emitter. I,m just wondering if te size of the emitter is the only thing that creates the divergence. Is it possible to have a big emitter and less divergent beam original from a diode?

    Hi,

I can confirm that they are 40µm Emitters. For the divergence: usually the larger the emitter, the smaller the divergence. Unfortunately the product of emitter size and divergence which is constitutes beam quality, increases for smaller emitters. The divergence in the slow axis of the emitter is also current dependent. It increases with current. That means, if you overdrive the diodes your beam quality decreases, so that although the beam power increases from acertain current on the brightness does not anymore.

I think the divergence is a characteristic of the refraction as the laser passes from the die into the air (but don't quote me). I believe the difference in the length of the emitter differentiates the modes of the laser diode i.e. single mode vs. multi mode. If I've interpreted my observations correctly, the wider the emitter the larger the near field diameter (and not more divergence).

So my thinking (which may well be too simplistic or wrong!) based on these two concepts is that similar diodes, one with a 100um and one with a 40um emitter would both have the same raw divergence. I wonder if this is correct
