Heatsink/fans on top, lasers/optics mounted underneath the heatsink (in a sealed chamber), ~1/4"divider plate, then lower enclosure contain the electronics.
I would have done that, the only problem I cannot source out a large heatsink which I wanted. lovely design tho!

But not the type of case im looking.

    @ Norty,

Have you got the picture that you said it was meant for a big +10W system?
Really want to get an idea of how it looks like.

    Thanks alot guys!

Im just a big fan of double decker type case with heatsink in the middle, it just turns me on :P

    Hi Phillip,

get it touch with Maurits from www.deltour.biz

I needed a heat sink 480x250x40mm and they supplied it. If you don't have access to a mill, I would get them to machine it flat for you. They can also drill and tap all the holes for you too as well as anodize it. They could make the whole thing for you.

If you want to do the heat sink in the middle design, I'd do something like the Martin one in the pic you posted.
That would be the most straight forward way to design and build a custom inclosure like you want.

I went for a carbon fibre lid. Not so much for looks but because I wanted a three sided lid that i could remove with only few screws for easy servicing. I was lucky that my friend is a carbon fibre master. He helped me a lot. Normally I'd estimate a carbon lid would add at least $1000 to the cost unless you can make it yourself. After going through the process of using carbon fibre and seeing how labour intensive it is, I can see why it can become so expensive.

Vacuum forming a lid out of polycarbonate could be a viable option too.

The way Edison had made his case is quiet elegant too, plus the way he has used the extruded sections and held them together via two end plates reduces expensive machining operations and makes it easier to service.

When designing or building a custom case, it is totally possible to get exactly what you want, just be prepared to spend from 5-40 times what it cost to buy an off the shelf case.

    Good luck

    Hi Kit!

I saw one of your old thread,
The Carbon Fiber lid has inspired me , I do have an access to carbon fiber itself as a cloth with me here its a 3K Twill weave texture, I was just thinking to do it in a simple way was to find a hard foam block and cut them to the desired top casing size then apply epoxy resin and lay cf cloth about 2-4 layers, and and again apply final epoxy, let it cure for a day then sand out the rough surface until its smooth then spray lacquer for the final touch. Doesnt need to be super F1 strong, just the looks that im after.

I agree that edison's case looks elegant,

Ill try to contact Maurits, to see if he can supply me only a big basic heatsink.

Thanks alot for the info Kit and everyone here!

    Cheers!

Oh, cool! Sound like you have a plan.

That should be strong enough. We used 2xcarbon the inside, 2xfiberglass in the middle then 2x carbon on the outside. It ended up around 1.5mm thick and plenty strong enough.

    Good luck and have fun!
