    Default Attention red diode users

Tired of back reflections killing your diodes? Lets try some quarter wave film. Anybody else game to try? two 8.5 x 11 sheets would do almost all active photonlexicon personel. I haven't tested it yet. The theory is that back reflections after passing through the will have a opposite "sense" and not make it back into the diode and interfere so it comes down to the question of does constructive interference kill the diode or raw power blows the faucet off. . So what if we loose 4-8% when it hits the film, that is better then a dead diode.

The plant that makes the stuff is in Cleveland!
Andrew! Do you feel like going for a drive on your lunch hour?

I have not killed one by back reflection, i know others have, i would like to try the film, a bit concerned about it melting if it is plastic, glass would be better. Im waiting for Lasorb due to blue rays frapping if a butterfly flaps his wings in india, my diode blows

Oh, I just had a oh $hit moment, it would only work for reflections that occur AFTER the combining cube. Still worth a try for single diodes.
might work just fine after the cube too, we will have to try.

If it holds up to a 300 watt arc lamp in a LCD projector, I think it will do just fine with 250 mW of diode. It does turn yellow over time when exposed to blue/UV, thats why you can get tonnes of used video projectors on ebay with yellow tints. but it takes a year or more.

being a film, I wonder how much it would distort the beam.. generally I would think soft materials would have at least a small lensing effect given that it's difficult to remove all mechanical stresses after mounting, especially with changing temperature. Note that the applications listed generally do not require 0 lensing effect.

I'd be interested in trying this as well. I've lost at least one to back reflection. I've just logged 77 hours on an open can diode, last meter reading was 255mW. With a way to prevent back reflection damage and a lasorb, these things would be great!

Why wouldn't this work for lasers with a cube? You would just need to rotate the laser by 90 degrees.
