LOL. I don't think you count as a student. A student is someone who is paying thousands of dollars per year to take classes to better themselves. These kids deserve a break just like the guys in the military deserve a break for doing all they do for the peanuts they are paid. So, that's why there are such things as student discounts and military discounts.

Personally, I really don't see much of a reason for a student to be involved in ILDA. I think it would be a waste of their time. But, I'll give the benefit of the doubt and assume that the exposure to the ILDA list gives them some sort of insight into the laser show industry that might be valuable to them later in their career. But, if you are past school and you are in a situation in life where you can only afford $50 for a membership because you are on a fixed income or you just don't make a lot of money doing whatever you do for a living, then I have to say that you really have no business joining ILDA and I question how you are even able to take part in this hobby. Or, maybe you just feel that ILDA isn't a big enough deal to you to pay $125 and you can only justity $50 because you really don't care too much about it. In that case, I'd again assert that you have no business joining ILDA.

One of the sports forums I go to has a free section and a premium section. By joining the premium section you get access to the paid forum, where a lot of people in-the-know post. You get access to things like a ticket-exchange so that you can trade tickets. It reminds me a bit like ILDA. Every now and then they will offer a "free" weekend so that people who want to check out the premium site can do so. They don't get access to everything but they can poke around and see what it is all about. One smart thing is that they don't get access to the forum because. If the ILDA website wasn't set up in such an antiquated way, they could probably do something like that. I think that is basically what you want. I think most people here who want to join ILDA want to join not for what it can do for them but just to see what goes on behind those secret doors. Well, nothing really goes on. Just a lot of bickering. Some discounts and networking - but if you can't afford to pay $125, you can't afford the things that the discounts apply to.

Anyway, that's all I have to say about that.

I think that's pretty spot on. I wouldn't even pay 5 bucks to display the logo in my sig., but at the same time i realize ILDA has value, just not to me. If you are doing (or trying to do, make or sell) lasershow related items and/or art and want that logo.... yeah, pony up the money.

This was the main problem when I was discussing this as president of ILDA, what could we offer as benefits for $50 membership? It did not add up! So we took no action at the time.

I will point out that when ILDA was started, Ron Goldstein (pres. of LaserMedia and the man who called everyone together) had the idea that the dues would be around $5,000 at the high end for the bigger companies.... but all of us "little guys" attending voted that down! I wonder what ILDA would have been like had that been the case?

    If that had happened.

well I am sure back in the before times this wasn't THAT unreasonable, after all if you were doing laser shows chances are you had spent a LOT of money on lasers, not like now where anyone can build a 30kpps full color projector and sound card dac for well under $1000

On the other hand, if you don't have to spend a lot of money on equipment then that leaves more to pay on ILDA dues.

Speaking of the ILDA conference, I've been informed that there will be a discount offered to members of PhotonLexicon.

Here's the link to my post about it in the meet and greet sub-forum.

Wording is a bit odd on that site. My take on it is that if you pay $50 your membership expires at the end of the year and that is why the discount. If you join in December you pay $125 but it is good through the next year as well.
