Ok. Here's a clue. Count the columns. Then figure out how many divisions there are in each. Another clue is that you might see the points of a sideways parabola. I created the original design in 2001. It can be perfectly represented in a bitmap of 256 pixels square.

If you read it left to right, top to bottom, it is every value from 00 to ff (0 to 255) in binary, in order.
