    my guess is that the optics on this table have nothing to do with the big laser.

    If they're part of the targetting system then they probably want to avoid distorting the wavefront with gunk on the optics anyway.

    It was probably one of those "hey you, put this on and look technical for the photo" moments.

    Naa,,, The gunk compensates for atmospheric distortions.
