I would have said the larger (longer) mirror on the wides would be the only area they could differ.
As to quantify it... not too sure.

I've not pushed my wides on the kpps but at a sensible angle @40K they look spot on. You'd probably need someone who owned both sets to give their comparison...

the DT40 wides compared to the DT40 regulars are dead on exact. other than the fact that the wides just scan *beam effects* much much wider. you can not scan graphics at the 90 degrees. you would keep your graphics to the regular 12 degree or so angle.

I do keep the 40 wides and regulars tuned to 30K. At 30 K, even the regular 40K's can give you a little bit of a bigger angle than at 40K. And to be quite honest, there is no need to have a scanner tuned to 40K. As 99% of all ILDA shows, images and graphics are written/optimized for 30K scanning.

At 30K, i have *never* once had an image or graphic that i couldnt scan properly because it was "too slow."

The 40 wides will knock your socks off my friend. you cant go wrong with them.

That looks great....sounds like they are faster than my Catweasel's...they also have a huge scan area if you want them to. Tuned near 30kpps...they do killer beams set for wide scanner settings like that, but not very hot on the graphics...even at 8 deg optical. Guess it is time to trade up to some new gear...

...catweasles ? 30k? huge scan area? In one sentence ?
Catweasles were the only affordable alternative to General scanning at the time.
They are not recommended to be used above 500mW, ridiculous high power I thought at the time
Right now there hardly is a rgb projector below that power.

Ever tried to fit some red on those mirrors ? At 40 deg angle you DO need a 1mm beam or less.
Any thing you shoot over the mirrors might confuse the position detectors.

I hate to burst your bubble, but catweasles are the worst closedloop galvos out there, imho.
The 'clones' have all caught up in the mean time.

Personally I'm even thinking to upgrade from 6800 to DT40W.

Maybe you think they are junk......they have served me well for the past 5 years. Plus they are almost indestructable. I know they wont do huge scans at any fast speed...but for doing beams they are great...plus they are paid for many times over from the service I have from them. I have several sets of scanners....different kinds/brands. Not unhappy with any of them....hard to beat 6815's though.

Let me nuance my statement, catweasles are not the worst, let alone junk.
They're the last galvos I would buy now, if available.

What is it that makes the DT-40 widers go wider? Is the scanner block different somehow? Or do the galvos just have more range?

The mount is slightly modified to accomodate the larger scan angle, the amps are slightly modified and the scanners have major modifications particularly in the feedback. Really neat scanner!

Thumbs up You need very thin beams

Keep in mind you need a very thin beam when using these big scan angles.

I have made a example with 6mm mirrors. with 90 degrees scanangle you need a beam thinner than 2mm to fit the mirrors.

So using 635nm or 650nm flashlight laser are a waste of money with these scanners.
