I know that. But don't dye lasers rely on both processes at once? Phosphorescence to get the target colour, and stimulated emission at the target wavelength to get it lasing.

Obviously, a simple phosphorescent disk isn't enough. You'd need at least a cavity. But it's a start...

    Just a Little update.

So far this diode has about 12 hours at 1 watt. I kept the diode in the 70s F.

This is not a scientific test I just turn it on While I am working on other stuff and take a look at the meter every once in a while. Again I got this diode for $500 so I don't really want to kill it until I have some others to play with.

The jest of this story is They have no problem doing a watt for ~12 hours if kept cool. I am guessing that lower power levels will keep these going for a long time.

Has anyone pushed one of these to the breaking point yet?

VERY interesting. Do you have any active cooling? What kind of heatsinking did you provide? Was this 12 hours continuous?

    I'm impressed!
    Thanks!

    Hi Adam,

It is tec cooled open loop. I just give it about 2.7 watts and that seems to keep it about 75 when running at a watt.

The time is for a couple of hours a day over the last couple of days. Look at the first page in this thread there are some pics of the setup.

Ah! I also use cigarette packs in my experiments. Good work! Nice workstation too.

I'm not clear on this. Are you saying that you've run it for 12hrs+ continuously, or that you've done a number of shorter tests that you are summing up to be ~12hrs?

I think there is a significant difference, although I also acknowledge that 2hrs+ per session will be enough time for everything to settle in temperature-wise.

Sorry should have been more clear. Shorter test. I have run it for a couple of hours at a time, over a several of days.
It is harder than you think having a watt blasting around your house for hours at a time. You have to be careful what you are aiming at, and be careful to keep the diffuse reflection under control and keep out of the beam. It gets fatiguing.

These diodes certainly lend themselves to knife edging.
