How do we class PL members as "trusted members"

If certain people are going to hold back information or sabotage topics (like laserscopes) that could cost people who've invested a small fortune lots of money, then I think the secure area will fix that.

But I agree - who are you to determine who enters or not ? aside of the fact that its Specs forum - and he holds the keys to all the doors (and no disrespect meant here) - what gives anybody the right to decide if i'm trustworthy enough to get access to that information ?

what if you're wrong ? then you've actually MADE A DECISION to let me in, then i go take that information and make a super gazzilion watt ghetto blaster sized pulsed laser and start pointing it at cars on freeways...

i mean - trusted - okay - you don't know me - i'm sitting on the other side of the world from you. even if you've met me at a LEM - you don't know that i'm not psycho. I may just present well.

by deciding about whether to give me access to information - does that make you as responsible for my actions as I if i choose to do something unethical with it ?

and agreed this isnt about me as its not my forum, im just putting an idea out there for all to consider. im not saying im right just expressing my view and my view s the forum could contain even more useful information than it already does

so your view would be to keep the forum as is and people would keep selected bits of knowledge to them selves?

your going a bit OTT here mate.

the forum would operate as normal. i suspect the private area will not be flooded with posts as theres not many private ones out there. but a few posts will be created in the private section containing senative information.

if someone makes a post in the private section before going live it will need to be approved by the mod. if its found not to be private it wont get posted there.

so generally speaking people wont notice any difference in the forum

no, far from it. in my mind and how i see things working it only daves post on how to make a 445 pointer would go in the private section.

okay - so without saying to much - this isn't so much about keeping anything casio and 445nm away from public eyes as it is purely a safety thing.

Because its kind of hard to draw the line with safety when you're on a forum dedicated to lasers you know

Just for the record, most of my recent posts have been trying to demonstrate:
a) what I've experienced being tried and failed, or
b) what I consider to be a fun stab at 'possible workable suggestions' that might come up (to which I never expected an 'I like this comment', but maybe I missed some irony in there or something)

I'd hoped that my attempt to add judicious use of smileys would have got my point across, but it doesn't appear so, and the smileys have gone missing in the quotes...

My suggestion to set up an alternative forum was in reference to the fact the 'owner' of a forum I used to admin decided one day he'd finally had enough of some of the rubbish and threatened to pull the whole thing. Within a day some members had created a 'backup' of the forum to run 'just in case'... All it served to do was dilute the knowledge, divide the groups, and create additional bad feeling between the parties concerned.
Just be aware that any decision to 'lock down' certain topics could push people to start afresh on their own - which benefits none of the parties.

I mean, we could have a new forum up tonight with the 445 thread cache...

All forums go through times like these - and most frequently get through it by leaving everything alone. It'll soon blow over. They also get bogged down by 'useful' suggestions from its members. Again, (imho) the best thing the admin can do is ignore all these threads, and see where we are in a months time.

About the best option I've seen so far has been from 'Jon of the Punctuation' but it'll fall down because of the high admin overhead. In 6 months time (if not sooner), the people charged with the vetting will be bored/fed up of it, and it'll have to revert to something more organic.

Well, If you go by post count, you would eliminate the lurker types like me.
(I've been here longer then my join date)..

I like the idea of a limited liability form you have to sign.
Possibly also some kind of test, to see if you actually know
anything about the topic, aka lasers, and laser safety.
Asking for money is kinda sketchy, but id probably pay, lol.

Like I said in the last thread, why don't we just chill the fuck out until this all blows over. There is NO absolute need to be classifying members to allow them to talk about special things in special areas. Just wait a couple days till Admin/Jon let us know what is going on.
