Cool deal, Dan. I look forward to seeing those pics! I agree that it's best to have the parts in hand before you buy any materials. Sure, you have the dimensions already, but it's hard to visualize cable runs, etc. Much better to have it in your hand to play with.

Keep us posted of your progress!

    Adam,
    I have your pics!

Project Toblerone / Floyd is a go!

I've been conglomerating loads of ideas over the last few weeks and months, and I've spent the last few days down the workshop sawing and hammering metal until it looks about the right shape
The design has changed a little, but still remains essentially the same. I've nipped and tucked parts, as well as adding upgrade space, should I need to PBS another green or blue in future.

I have all the material now for the panels, posts, plates and such, as well as a bucket of fixings. The only thing I'm missing is some 1.5mm ally sheet and a piano hinge for the two side covers. One will be fixed, the other (on the optical path side) will be key-locked on a hinge to take a look under the bonnet for tinkering and such... (micro switched interlock will be added at some point for safety)

This thing weighs about the same weight as Africa though...

None of the parts are finished, I've just cut them to size, and held them in position by hand for the photos.

Finishing this case will take weeks, and I won't have time for at least another month...

If anyone wants to know, the dimensions are:
    - Width: 317mm
    - Height: 320mm
    - Length: 562mm
    - Base Plate thickness: 12.7mm
    - Support posts are 1" thick
    - Main strut is 3/4" bar

But at least I've outlayed all the material costs, and it just needs time and effort now to build the damm thing.

Let me know what you think!

    Dan

leave that bar at the top exposed for like 8 inches in the middle, it will make a great handle.

Good thinking! I like that idea.
I may have to borrow it but I think I will put a plate of some sort under the bar to keep the air seal.

    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi Dan

very... different ... reminds me of a concept product .... you know ... just designed that way, because they can ... very unconventional and very cool

for instance im a big Fan of TAG HEUER watches .... they have totaly reinvented the traditional watch movement ... just thrown away 100s of years of proven design

but its cool see here ....

coming back to you case ..... the only practical issue i see is usable space .... as when the sides are on it will limit the amount of footprint that you can use .... every thing will have to mounted close to the centreline of the top plate

    all the best ... Karl

if he shoots the lasers UP thru the plate and then just uses the top level for color mixing he could get away with it.

    Nice pics Dan!

One question: What's with all the short cylinders supporting the middle plate? Surely you don't need that many supports... Doesn't that cut into the usable space for the underside? (Thought that space was going to be used for electronics?)

agreed, if you welded this case you could get away with a single set of supports in the middle.

I wear a HEUER... and am a big fan as well... but I have not heard of this one yet... Glad I didn't buy the replacement yet, because now I have to

Back to the issue at hand, I agree with the above comments about the supports under the plate. There's a lot of lost space... If you use a single pair of supports in the middle you would be fine... your plate is thick enough it should not have a problem without any supports even

    Nice work nonetheless
